Outland Comics Newsletter: Outcries!

No. 71, Week of January 15, 2007

Welcome to Outcries! – Well – it’s clearly “winter in Idaho”! As I write this – the temperature outside is -4 degrees and the projected “high” is 1 degree. This is that time of year when all you want to do is stay in-doors – and read that big stack of Comics you’ve wanted to catch up on. I believe I read somewhere that, according to a recent non-scientific study, reading Comic Books will keep you warm, boost the immune system and can help in warding off such illnesses as the common cold and flu. Really. Well maybe not. But you have to admit it sounds good.

What’s coming this week – we’ve got a tiny bit of Civil War coming with Fantastic Four #542 CW, plus the latest 52 (week #36), Helmet of Fate: Detective Chimp #1 (I know you’ve been waiting for that one), War of the Undead #1 (MR), a Xena Strange Visitor One Shot, Sandman Mystery Theatre Sleep Of Reason #2 (of 5) (MR) and more Green Lantern #16!

Clifton provides another “Pick of the Week – and makes an astounding admission!  Derek Peterson also provides his “pick of the week” – and Garrett Brinker’s back with more Magic the Gathering – Reviews and Insights.  And as always, we provide you with the latest in Variant Covers, and Trade Paperbacks!

Clif’s Pick of the Week: Thunderbolts #110. Rarely do I stand here and admit when I am wrong but this is one of those times. Thunderbolts has quickly gone from one of the few books I try my best not to read to one of the books that I can’t wait for the next issue of. I’m a big fan of the original Thunderbolts and the concept but they had some of the most obscure villains for the cast.  Within my first year of reading it, I was ready to leave it. Now, thanks to Civil War, the Thunderbolts are back and with a vengeance! Actual villains. Actual redemption (to a degree). With this issue, Warren Ellis proves once more why he’s one of the top writers in the industry. He’s reinvented Stormwatch (The Authority and Planetary), Iron Man, Galactus (Ultimate Extinction), the New Universe (Newuniversal) and the concept of Superheroes in general (Nextwave), This is a must read for all fans of Marvel and Civil War. [Just a note – Marvel is sold-out of this issue – but we still have some issues left – get ‘em while you can!]

Derek’s Pick of the Week: Newuniversal. I just read the first and second issues of Warren Ellis’ new creation, Newuniversal. I wasn't able to pick up number one when it first came out but Marvel’s releasing a second printing of it on Wednesday January 17, 2007. I recommend that you pick it up and read it. As should be expected with these new books there’s a lot of stuff is still left to be told. Number one is a definite set up, and has a lot of "What of the hell..." kind of moments. Definitely a good read. Lot's of emotion, rooting for certain characters, and wondering what is going to happen, and what you want to happen. Laroca's art to boot, adds to a wonderful book, that I recommend to all those that love Warren Ellis, want a sweet story, and love superhero comic books!

Magic the Gathering - Reviews and Insights! With Garrett Brinker: Welcome! It’s time to finish up the breakdown for the color wheel. I saved my favorite for last. Black is the color for Skeleton’s, Zombie’s, Demon’s, and plagues. Many players gravitate toward black because it has powerful effects. Timing on black spells and abilities can be the trickiest in the game. It requires serious assessment of what you think your opponent has in their hand and deck. Black has some huge power house creatures but requires either life totals or sacrificing creatures to keep them in play. Often huge board clearing effects or lots of damage to your opponent are available but inevitably leaves you open. If an opponent capitalizes on an open counter attack, the black player often finds themselves on the losing end. But, if you have played smart your opponent finds themselves in an insurmountable disadvantage. This is my favorite color because of the versatility black offers. It can be combined with any other color effectively and frequently.

The two most popular archetypes for black are “Reanimation” and “Control”. The “Reanimation” deck focuses on reviving creatures that have been put in the graveyard so they can pound on your opponent again and again. It really changes how often you can throw your creatures in front of attackers because you know your creatures are coming back. Often high powered low toughness creatures are utilized for these decks. They tend to be low cost and very effective in this deck type.  The “Control” deck works by either controlling the number and or types of cards in an opponents hand or by destroying creatures almost as soon as they hit the board. Spells that force discards and creatures that make an opponent discard over and over are almost always black.

Some popular cards that have defined black abilities are “Terror”, “Dark Ritual”, “Mind Twist”, “Lord of the Pit”. Some of my new favorites are “Sudden Spoiling”, “Smallpox”, and “Lim-Dul the Necromancer”.  I am really excited to see where the new set is taking the color spectrum.  Planar Chaos will be taking each color into new areas not typical of the original breakdown. The rumors are that: Green is getting direct damage. Black is getting counterspells. Blue is getting mana acceleration. Red is getting explosive creature growth. White is getting huge effects at the cost of your life total. It should be tons of fun. Planar Chaos will be out in February!  Thanks again!
