Outland Comics Newsletter: Outcries!

No. 69, Week of January 1, 2007

Happy New Year!

Welcome to Outcries! – It’s most likely New Year’s Day or the day after when you’re reading this issue of Outcries – and with the New Year comes “New Year’s Resolutions” – and that’s the idea behind our Feature of the Month for January.  Here’s our New Year’s Resolution: READ MORE COMICS. That’s one resolution that’s pretty easy to keep – catching up on a title or character that you might have missed, trying out a new title, or picking out some of those “must reads” that you’ve always heard about. Now’s your chance! Start the New Year off right with our Feature of the Month!

Holiday Shipping Schedule – Please note that due to the Holiday “New Comic Day” will be on Thursday this week.

What’s Coming this week – There’s the latest 52 plus more Civil War titles arriving this week (all highlighted in Bold below) – Clifton provides us with not one but two “recommended reads” – plus we have the latest for you in Trade Paperbacks and Variant Covers

What’s New:  Just arrived – World of Warcraft Onyxia’s Lair Raid Expansion Deck!

Clif’s “Pick of the Week”: Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War. When it comes to big company events, none are better than Marvel at putting out as many tie-ins and one-shots as they can fit. Most of the time these are just cannon fodder, having a good story but nothing really imperative to the main story. Thankfully, this was not one of them. Though the plotline sounds horrible, Cap and Iron Man meet up one last time to see if things can be talked out before it escalates to the full war that they both know is inevitable. Through a series of flashbacks we see a lot of hypocrisy on both sides of this particular argument and yet we are also more understanding of why they have both chosen the way that they have. My main reason for liking this as much as I did was that Marvel has finally made me see why Iron Man and the registration can be seen as a good thing. This is the first issue that didn’t make me want to punch Tony in his face myself and for finally telling me his side of the story, they get my pick.

Annihilation #5.  When Marvel said they were changing the entire cosmic scene of their universe, they weren’t kidding. In a series where we have already seen the death of Quasar, Super-Skrull (though Skrull has already come back and they say Quasar should come back in the last issue), and Thanos (Who knows if he’ll actually stay dead) we can expect great things from the outcome. In this particular issue, we see Ronan of the Kree unknowingly take a new seat in the empire and, more importantly, we see the release of Galactus! After he and Silver Surfer were taken down they have been used as a power source for Annihilus’ Annihilation Wave and here we see Drax finally free them only to be left with Galactus saying, “Know me, Annihilus. Know me and know fear!” The rest of the issue is about Ronan. Mainly, when you get me caring about characters like Nova and Ronan and (believe it or not) Quasar, you have my full support. Here’s to seeing the many deaths and a lot of destruction in the next/last issue.
