Welcome to Outcries! And welcome to a new year. We’re off to a great start with many of the most popular Comic Titles also entering phases of their collective storylines that promise (here it comes) “to change the [fill in the publisher universe] as you know it – forever!” And we’re here to provide you with every single issue!
Clif’s Pick of the Week: The End League #1. Since everyone knows of writer Rick Remender from his insanely popular series Fear Agent (sarcasm), this one should have been a no-brainer, right? The End League follows some of the world’s last remaining super-heroes as they try to find Thor's Hammer; the only thing left that might save the world from the tyrants that have almost taken complete control. Told from Astonishman's perspective (the story is great, the names are cheesy), he is guilt ridden after he unwillingly caused the disaster that created all the super-powered beings. He now feels that saving humanity is the only way to make up for his part, which is still unknown to the rest of the world. Saving an over-run world from the evil beings that have taken it is nothing new. It's the basic concept for all super-hero books, but this one hits you out of nowhere. Rick Remender, though critically acclaimed, has really done nothing to make him a big name, and artist Mat Broome has been out of the game for what feels like over a decade. And yet, within the first 5 pages you get the feeling that they've been on top for quite some time. For now the series is bi-monthly but it is on-going. If you're looking for a gritty super-hero book, but don't want the over-the-top gore of MAX Punisher, this is definitely the book to get. A great way to start '08!
The Best of the Rest:
LOONEY TUNES #158 $2.25 – This one always makes me giggle (tee-hee)!
BADGER SAVES THE WORLD #1 – I never knew what a Badger was before reading this one!
DETECTIVE COMICS #840 – Intense, but the bigger words made my head hurt. Ow!
