Outland Comics Newsletter: Outcries!

No. 58, Week of October 9, 2006

Welcome to another issue of Outcries! – Well it’s here – Outlandcomics.com the Outland Comics Web-site has finally launched!  We’re very proud of the wonderful job that our “webmaster” Aaron Lee has done for us – and we’re sure you’ll think so too.  Be sure to check it out!

Clif’s “Pick of the Week”: Criminal #1.  Criminal is a great, old-school “heist gone wrong” type of story. Still riding the success from Captain America and Daredevil, it’s written by Ed Brubaker and is being printed under Marvel’s Icon imprint (the same home to Bendis’ Powers titles). It’s the classic tale of some old “friends” wanting to do another “job” together (if you get what I’m saying) but don’t know if they can trust each other after the last job that got most of them killed and left them with no loot. One half thinks they’re using the other kinda situation. So far it’s a little predictable but some great, gritty story-telling. Brubaker is definitely reassuring us that he is one of the top writers in the industry with this one. Mature Read.

My Two Cent’s: the Boss’ Quick Pick(s) of the Week:  This was to be some quick recommendations and actually meant for last weeks issues but they’re still pretty fresh – so here we go:  Secret Six #4 (nice touch with Cliff Steele’s head!), Justice League Of America #2 (How could they not vote ‘him’ in?!), Blue Beetle #5 (the chit-chat between young Blue Beetle and Batman is priceless), Trials Of Shazam #2 (this one is off to a really good start!), the Amazing Spider-Man #535 Civil War tie-in (Man! Now we’re talkin’! Don’t think Spidey’s long for those new duds “Uncle Tony” made for him!), plus Batman #657 (hmm, that kid needs a time-out!), and all the other Civil War tie-ins that came out last week! Some great stuff!

Comics in the News On October 4, Entertainment Weekly’s website, EW.com talked about the fact that the folks at DC Comics have recruited Richard Donner, director of 1978's Superman, to join forces with writer/onetime Donner assistant Geoff Johns and artist Adam Kubert – plus they’ve posted an exclusive preview of DC Comics’ upcoming Action Comics #844 (Read the article here).

Also on October 4, the Seattle Times profiled Ed Brubaker and the author’s noir world of comics work – including Marvel/Icon’s upcoming Criminal #1 -  the new monthly title (featuring art by Sean Phillips) is notable for being a straight crime story from Marvel (read the article here).

And more Comics buzz on National Public Radio – Brian K. Vaughan will discuss Pride Of Baghdad, Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina as part of an interview with Kurt Andersen on the National Public Radio program Studio 360. The interview is tentatively scheduled to run nationwide on October 20.

FREE Battlestar Gallactica “The Story So Far” DVD’s – We received a number of these last week – just ask Clifton and he’ll let you have one as long as the supply lasts.  If you’re a fan of the show – or better yet have never seen the show but wondered what all the fuss is about – this is just the thing – and they’re FREE.

What’s New:

DrawerBoxes!Late last week we received our first shipment of DrawerBoxes! If you haven’t seen these yet they’re a more rigid version of the Comic Long Boxes (just a little shorter) that open like a drawer. The neat thing is these boxes can be stacked 5-boxes high! These are ideal for the avid Comic Collector – they provide easy access to your collection without having to lift and move a ton of boxes just to get into that box on the bottom! The DrawerBoxes are just $13.00 each – or $11.70 for our Mailbox customers.  (Sorry – there’s no Preferred Customer Cards stamps or redeeming them for the DrawerBoxes!)

Universal Fighting System (UFS) – This fast paced and fun new CCG from Sabertooth Games just arrived last week. It’s based on classic video gaming titles such as Street Fighter® and Soulcalibur III (TM) – and is only available to retailers like us! Players take on the persona of legendary characters to do battle for supremacy. Do you have what it takes to be the best?

Thanks! Happy Reading! And – Don’t forget to visit us at Outlandcomics.com
