Outland Comics Newsletter: Outcries!

No. 59, Week of October 16, 2006

Welcome to another issue of Outcries! – There’s a bunch of great stuff arriving this week – there’s More Civil War (Wolverine! Ms. Marvel!) and to catch-up on it all the November Daily Bugle Newspaper! Also, there’s T-Shirts galore (Silver Surfer! Batman! Dark Phoenix!), Variant Covers, and the hard to find Star Trek the Original Series 40th Anniversary Bronze Phaser – the re-launch of The Authority, plus the Latest 52! And – just in time for Halloween – there’s What Were They Thinking? Monster Mash Up One Shot!  We’ve also got more Comics in the News – and Clifton puts his money where his mouth is with his “Pick of the Week”.

Clif’s “Pick of the Week”: 100 Bullets #76.  Though we saw some good books come out this week, I’m gonna switch my recommended read a little to a book that’s been coming out for over 7 years, and most don’t even know about it. 100 Bullets started out as a simple revenge book. An old man in a suit hands you a briefcase with 100 (go figure); untraceable bullets with a gun, and irrefutable evidence that “Insert Name Here” had wronged you and your life. Whether you decide to seek revenge or not is up to you. Yes or no, you will not be touched afterwards. After the first two years or so, though, we came to learn that the old man (Agent Graves) is actually trying to gain all his “pawns” back into a game (war?) that started back when the English first colonized America.

I’m a huge advocate for Vertigo’s Preacher run, but I’m pretty sure that this will beat it out of my top “Mature Reads” spot. #76 of the planned 100-issue run has come out and I can guarantee you it’ll blow you away. I’m so certain of it, that if you try the first trade out and don’t like it, I’ll refund 100% of your money and 10% more out of my own pocket (some restrictions apply). It’s that good! Mature Reads!

Comics in the News – The October 13, 2006 New York Times features an Art Review on “Masters of American Comics” showing at the Newark Museum in New York and profiles a variety of famous Comic Artists that you should all be familiar with. It describes it as a “landmark and a pleasure. (and) for many people..., it will be a revelation too.”  You’ll want to check this out – if only to view the ‘multi-media analysis’ of Jack Kirby’s Art! (read the article here).

Writer Bill Willingham will be a guest on the National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” later this month to discuss the original hardcover graphic novel Fables: 1001 Nights Of Snowfall.

On October 8, the Boston Globe interviewed Brad Meltzer, writer of DC Comics’ Justice League of America, about his latest novel inspired by former presidents and Freemasons” (read the article here).

In the October 8 issue of New Jersey’s Star-Ledger, Drew Sheneman profiles Dark Horse Comics’ Rex Mundi series in the article “Comics: "Rex Mundi" No. 1” (read the article here).

On October 5, the New York Daily News profiled Eric Shanower, creator of Image Comics’ Age of Bronze series in the Ethan Sacks-written “It's all Greek to him”. (read the article here).

FREE Throughout October – These “Halloween Mini-Comics” are a free gift for young trick-or-treaters to introduce them to the colorful world of comics! They’re better than candy – and they’re FREE.

What’s New:

The Idaho Edition of Monopoly®! – Outland Comics is one of the few retailers in Idaho Falls that will be carrying the Idaho Edition of the Game of Monopoly®. The Idaho Edition of the game was created as a fundraiser to support the many humanitarian projects that the Idaho/Eastern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation are working on as a provider of quality sight and hearing assistance. The game covers a full spectrum of what Idaho is about, from state symbols, historic and scenic places to its universities, agriculture and industries. All proceeds from the game go to the Idaho/East Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.  This Game is a must for all Idaho residents and makes a great Holiday gift idea!
