Comics in the Media!
Entertainment Weekly has posted a 4-page preview of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier at http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20152452,00.html, along with an article that praises League as "a terrifically acclaimed comic book franchise." (But we already knew that.)
Rolling Stone Magazine on-line recently highlighted "The Gunslinger Born" based on the Dark Tower series of novels by Stephen King; see scenes from the Gunslinger Born at http://www.rollingstone.com/photos/gallery/16696830/the_dark_tower_stephen_kings_c.
Clif’s Pick of the Week: Ex Machina #31 (and everything before it). Since Sam and I are the only 2 people buying this title, I'll go with the assumption that it's new to most people so here's the run down: Mitchell Hundred is the Mayor of New York City. He also used to be the super-hero known as the Great Machine. After an explosion gives him the ability to "talk" to anything electronic, Hundred makes a costume and starts his own war on crime. In this world, he was there to stop the second plane on 9/11 and since then, has decided the best way to help people, is to do it through the legal system and from the core, hence he ran for Mayor. Half of the stories are told through flashback to a time when he was the Great Machine and it intertwines great hero tales with edgy political drama (he's tackled gay marriage, censorship and even the KKK!). Written by Brian K. Vaughn (Y: the Last Man, Runaways), this is certainly not a comic for all the masses. Vaughn himself says it was "born out of my anger with what passes for our current political leadership (on both sides of the aisle)" so you can understand that it'll ruffle a few feathers. If you’re open to stories with "taboo" subject matter, I highly recommend this one. In my opinion, it's one of the most under-rated comics we get in!
Recommended Reads from last week: BOYS #11 (MR) (…said it before…you need to check this one out!), PENANCE RELENTLESS #2 (OF 5) (this is off to a good start…and continues to be intriguing; what’s old Robbie up to? [“one”.]), CHECKMATE #19 (this title lagged for a while a few month back but seems to be getting it’s rhythm back!), DEATH OF THE NEW GODS #1 (OF 8) (…this is worth the read particularly if you’re a DC fan and following the Countdown and other impending “Final Crisis” related tie-in’s – and wondered who the heck the ‘New God’s’ are and where they came from; this first issue provides a great “cliff-notes” [with pictures] version of their origin!), JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #14 (good story!), SIMON DARK #1 (this is one that you might have missed; interesting new storyline about Gotham’s “other” protector.), CAPTAIN AMERICA #31 CWI (…each one of these issues has just left me anxious for the next! Bucky’s day is coming…and I think Faustus and the Red Skull and Lukin days are coming as well – in a bad way!)!!
