Clif’s “Pick of the Week”Spawn #160.  Wait…Spawn is still coming out? Yes sir, it is and boy how it is. Since the “revamping” of him back at issue #150, Spawn has been sailing up by using the same formula that made him hot 12 years ago. Remember the Armageddon that Spawn was supposed to help Hell with? Remember the power-meter that would go down every time he used them? Well, thanks to David Hine (the new writer since #150) you will. Heaven has chosen its warriors, Hell has chosen its demons and Spawn is caught in the middle. All that – and a near empty power-meter – threaten to destroy everything Spawn has been trying to save all these years. I can’t say that I have ever been this excited for a Spawn comic. And its on a monthly release schedule that I don’t think they’ve ever been able to keep before.

Magic the Gathering - Reviews and Insights! With Garrett Brinker: Welcome once again! This week I will give you some of my favorite picks from the upcoming Time Spiral set. A quick preface though, for anyone who has recently started playing Magic or who has thought about playing, this set will be one to get in on for sure. One of the big prevailing themes for the set is taking some of the most powerful cards in MTG History and printing them with a power balancing mechanic called “suspend.” This will allow you to play the power card but it will hang out for however many turns specified, and then it will resolve.

Now the meat, any of the new cards I have seen with the “suspend” mechanic have been bombs. They redid the “Black Lotus” as the “Sacred Lotus”. The acceleration the “lotus” cards provide are the best. The new installment should be no different. I am really looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of Ith, High Arcanist The “Maze of Ith from, The Dark was always one of my favorite cards, but now we have the same ability but with a 3/5 body behind it. One combo I immediately latched on to when previewing the spoiler is our friend Ghostway from the Ravnica block and the new “Restore Balance”.  When timed properly your opponent will have to sacrifice all their creatures and yours will hit the board at the end of the turn. Throw the Guildpact card “Ignorant Bliss” into the fray and watch your opponents face go into conniption mode!

I can’t leave this week without mentioning the true reprint aspect of the new set. Wizards has taken cards from each set—yes, each set in MTG history and reprinted them with a special icon. There will be one per pack as a common card that could give you two rare cards in a booster! The 2 most notable reprints are Akroma, Angel of Wrath” and “Nichol Bolas”.  Get ready for time spinning fun with the release of Time Spiral on shelves October 6!!

Comics in the News The big news this late this week was the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of IRON MAN. Downey is indeed a very talented actor – and he’s already got most of Tony Stark’s vices and addictions down-pat. You know what good ol’ Oscar Wilde used to say: “Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life”.
