Outland Comics Newsletter: Outcries!
No.
60, Week of October 30, 2006
Welcome to another issue
of Outcries! – Well Outcries
is back after taking a week off – and it looks like the rest of the gang is
here as well! Garrett Brinker brings us his latest “Magic the
Gathering - Reviews and Insights” – and Clifton provides his
perspective on the latest iteration of Spawn with his “Pick
of the Week”. Plus – as always – there are plenty of Trade Paperbacks, Posters and Variant Covers arriving as well. Be sure to check
out the Incredible Hulk #100, plus the Latest 52!
Also arriving this week is World of Warcraft
and Pirates of Davey Jones Curse Special Edition packs!
Clif’s “Pick of the
Week”: Spawn:
Godslayer. I know I’ve
been on a Spawn kick the last little while, but the only thing
reminiscent of Spawn here is the costume and maybe the origin of
the Godslayer (barely, but it’s too vague to even say that). It
was, however, a great story. Good action and fantasy – and a better love story
than the original (I think). And on top of that (and this shouldn’t come as a
surprise) remarkable painted art by Jay Anacleto. There’s a reason that this is
the guy taking over for Alex Ross on Marvels #2. At $6.99, it's a little pricey
but I think you’ll find it worth the amount after you finish.
Magic
the Gathering - Reviews and Insights! With Garrett Brinker: Welcome! I thought it would be fun to
do an article for each color in Magic over the next few weeks. While some of
this may be elementary for the experienced players; it might help with some
development and deck building and be a great intro for newer players.
White is an appropriate choice to begin with
I think. First, let’s talk about the “theory behind white. White is
based on classic chivalry. Knights, Clerics, Priests, healing, preventing
damage, and protection are all traditional white realms. White’s
traditional enemies are Black and Red. One very popular way to play
white is to use a “weenie” deck. This archetype utilizes low cost, usually low
power creatures, to overwhelm your opponent while keeping some healing and some
damage prevention so you can absorb damage from larger creatures. White is
famous for this type of play because it has some of the best low cost creatures
like “Isamaru Hound of Konda” from Kamigawa and “Savannah
Lions”. Here I have to mention the newest member of the white “weenie” must
haves, the “Knight of the Holy Nimbus”. WOW! I can’t believe I
missed this in my Time Spiral initial card picks. For 2 white mana you get an
automatically regenerating 2/2 flanking creature.
Other traditional white
cards are powerful board clearing spells that destroy all creatures in play or
all lands in play. This works well with the “weenie” approach because when you
play one of those clearing spells you will have a hand full of weenie creatures
and will have your army back in short order. The life gain combinations can
make it very difficult to kill off a white player. When a player focuses on the
life gain aspect of white, it is not uncommon to see life point totals over 40
and 50! Some popular white cards include: “Serra Angel”, “Ballista
Squad”, “Paliden en Vec”, “Wrath of God”, “Skyknight
Legionnaire”, and “Soul Warden”. Until next time good
luck!
