Welcome to another issue of Outcries! – It’s been a busy time outside of the Outland realm these past few weeks and as a result we forgot to call out the Feature of the Month for November – This month we’re tying into the release of the latest motion picture in the James Bond franchise Casino Royale with “Special Operations: Spies, Secret Agents and Other Heroes”. For fans of Star Trek the Original Series there’s another 40th anniversary Deluxe Kirk Action Figure & Captain’s Chair. And just because it’s so cool looking I’m going to point out again the latest Batman Black White Series Mini Statue by Artist Kelley Jones that arrived last week – you’ve got to see this to appreciate it.

Magic the Gathering - Reviews and Insights! With Garrett Brinker: Welcome! Today we will take a look at red. This has always been one of my favorite colors. The philosophy of red is chaos, large explosive events like volcanic eruptions goblins, shamans, and dragons. Reds chaotic approach often gives large damage spells and abilities for some haphazard return damage to the controller. Popular archetypes for red are “burn” decks and “goblin” decks. “Burn” decks focus on lots and lots of direct damage. The game plan is to fling as much damage at your opponent and or creatures as possible with single spells or massive board clearing effects usually based on damage. Cards like “Ball Lightning”, “Volcanic Hammer”, “Blaze” and “Char” abound in these decks. “Char” from the Ravnica block has seen loads of tournament play and epitomizes red’s philosophy. For 3 mana Char deals 4 damage to target creature or player and 2 damage to you.
The “goblin” deck focuses on those little nasty green skinned men that overwhelm by numbers and numbers and numbers. You throw cheap creatures in the way of the titans to keep you alive and then swarm your opponent. The “goblin” decks almost always have a way to sacrifice creatures to deal loads of damage to your opponent and pump up your goblins. Classic cards for these decks are “Mon’s Goblin Raiders”, “Goblin King” and “Orcish Orriflame”. Some new cards for red that I think could be especially potent are from Time Spiral. “Empty the Warrens” allows you to put “X” 1/1 goblin tokens into play based on “X” mana spent. The kicker on this card is that it has “Storm” so it is copied for each spell previously played that turn. Couple this with spells that have been suspended and resolved this turn and you have an unbelievable army in 1 turn! The new dragon “Bogardan Hellkite” is BRUTAL especially in sealed deck. Finally I really like the new “Thief of Fortune”. When the thief is in play, if your life total would be reduced to less than 0 it becomes 1 instead. Sweet, I can’t die from damage! Until next time!
