Welcome to Outcries! – There’s plenty of great comics coming this week – DC continues to wind-down to the forthcoming “World War III” in 52 Week #49 (only three more to go and no sign of giant Hawkgirl or that other Green Lantern dude’s eye…and wait a minute – didn’t Cyborg have somebody’s arm struck in him? Man – that’s a lot of ground to cover!), there’s more Civil War epilogues in New Avengers #29 CWI, Thunderbolts #113 CWI, Ghost Rider #10 CoW, Spider-Man Back In Black Handbook, and She-Hulk 2 #17. Plus there’s the post-annihilation launch of Nova #1, and as always, the latest selection of Variant Covers, Trade Paperbacks, Graphic Novels and Hardcovers!
“Clif’s Pick of the Week: Midnighter #6. In what I believe to be the best Wildstorm title since their re-launch almost 7 months ago (that’s right. 7 months and only one issue of the much talked about book Wildcats…well, much talked about before they fell behind), Midnighter is easily the coolest character that has surfaced. Ruthless and stubborn as he ever was, we finally get to see a soft side to him in this story about love, loss and revenge. I know the type of “love” Midnighter feels isn’t the most accepted, but writer Garth Ennis makes it feel all the same. The story takes place in feudal Japan (though no time-frame is ever given) and appears to be a telling of Midnighter and Apollo as they were during that era. From the title, you can guess which one of the two would fill the “loss” category but it doesn’t even matter. I’ve been a big fan of the Authority and its characters since Warren Ellis launched the new team back in ’99 and, that I can recall, this might just be the best, personal story out of all their stories. When you have a team so focused around destruction, you forget how versatile they are and that they can be written from all kinds of different angles. Ennis and this issue prove just that.
“Quick Picks” from last week you should be checking out: Immortal Iron Fist #4, Justice League Of America #7, Omega Flight #1 CWI (of 5), Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes #28, Detective Comics #831, Annihilation Heralds of Galactus Silver Surfer Firelord, and Dark Tower Gunslinger Born #3 (of 7). They’re all well worth a read.
