Clif’s Pick of the Week: Black Summer #2. I've been a fan of Warren Ellis' writing ever since my first time reading Stormwatch almost 10 years ago and he never seems to slow down. Black Summer is an 8-issue tale that begins with one of the members of the disbanded Seven Guns killing the president, the vice president and all of their advisors, claiming that America isn't the same America that our founding fathers intended it to be – that so much corruption and greed has entered it that we need to start over. As you can imagine, this sets off quite a number of things including the other members of the Seven Guns. It's a good thriller asking the ever popular question of "who can you trust?" mixed in with some good old superhero throw-downs. The down side to this book is that it appears Ellis is throwing in his two cents when it come to his opinion on our government (he's British), with comments mirroring current events throughout the book. If you don't like anti-government stories, you might want to stay away. If you can separate fact from fiction and take this story as another fictional superhero story, it's an amazing read. Worth the read if you're willing to try a new route. MATURE READ!
Recommended Reads from last week: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #543 (the stepping “on” point for Marvel’s “One More Day” Storyline), BATMAN #668, (great Morrison story and great art from Williams – plus best line from Batman: “…because if I was the killer you’d be dead already”.), GREEN ARROW YEAR ONE #4 (OF 6) (gets better and better – great origin tale!), IMMORTAL IRON FIST #8 (just great kung-fu stuff!), WOLVERINE #56 (great story of an interesting 9-to-5 work shift!), THUNDERBOLTS #116 (gotta love that crazy ol’ Norman Osborne)!!
