Outland Comics Newsletter: Outcries!

No. 54, Week of September 11, 2006

Welcome to another issue of Outcries! – Well, it’s looking like another great week! Clifton is back in action with a “Pick of the Week”, Garret Brinker joins us with his report on the Magic the Gathering Pro Tour Qualifier in Boise – and we plan to launch our Outland Comics Web-site this week!  We’ll probably send out a little note to let everyone know its up – but in the meantime remember to check out Outland Comics.com later this week and then be sure to let Aaron Lee know what a great job he’s done for us! And let us know what you think about the Web-site too. We’re always looking to improve!

Things not to be missed this week include: the latest 52 (week 19), Batman LOTDK #210, The Boys #2, Devi #3, DMZ #11, Ex Machina #23, Green Arrow #66 Martian Manhunter #2,  Aquaman: Sword Of Atlantis #44, and the new Marvel Heralds of Galactus Boosters!

If you’re looking for something new and just a little different, check out Elephantmen #2, that‘s my recommended read for the week.

Clif’s “Pick of the Week”Cross Bronx #1. There were some decent reads this week, but this is the one that really stood out. It’s a new, edgy, crime story written by the same guy who was hired by Marvel to kill off Thor. Some great stuff that’s worthy of comparison to Bendis’ earlier work like Goldfish and Torso. A great book to get into, however it is only a 4 issue mini-series, so don’t get too attached. Mature Read

Magic the Gathering - Reviews and Insights! With Garrett BrinkerWelcome! It’s been a hectic month and we have lots to cover. First, let’s cover my Pro Tour Qualifier report. Boise was tons of fun. I did not do as well as I had hoped with a 2-4 record. There were some very memorable moments for me. I lost my first match with a silly mistake! I had Flame Fullisade (Until end of turn each permanent you control has Tap to deal one damage to target creature or player) in hand and miscounted my permanents. I had enough to kill my opponent but I targeted his creature instead! Second I have to eat crow. In my initial assessments of Guildpact I seriously dogged on the card Borbgyomos. However, in sealed deck format Borbgyomos was a win the game creature. He is still subject to the creature removal disadvantage I originally tagged him with but I felt the wrath of his trample, give each creature a +1/+1 counter abilities. When flying creatures were on the board and Borbgyomos doled out his counters the game was usually over in 3 turns or less. The top 8 Coldsnap draft was wild. They pulled 5 Rimescale Dragons out of the draft packs!! One player ended up with 2 in his draft deck! (He subsequently went on to win the tournament.)

I am anxiously awaiting the Time Spiral release later this month. It is with some sadness though that we bid the Kamigawa block goodbye on the tournament front. Kamigawa has been one of the best blocks to hit the scene in a long time. Several of the cards from the set are sure to see lots of play in the Extended format and retain their value.  Next time, previews from Time Spiral.
